Pre-Installation Planning
Before you begin installation, spend time selecting the optimal location for your weather station. This decision will impact data accuracy for years to come.
Site Selection Criteria:
- Open Area: At least 4 times the height of nearby obstacles away from buildings, trees, and structures
- Level Ground: Avoid slopes, hills, and depressions that could affect wind and temperature readings
- Representative Location: Choose a spot that represents the general conditions of your farm
- Accessibility: Ensure you can safely access the station for maintenance
Tools and Materials Needed
- Weather station kit (included with your order)
- Post-hole digger or auger
- Concrete mix (2 bags recommended)
- Level
- Measuring tape
- Compass
- Basic hand tools
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Prepare the Foundation
Dig a hole 600mm deep and 300mm wide. This provides a stable foundation for your weather station mast.
Step 2: Install the Mast
Place the mast in the hole and ensure it’s perfectly vertical using a level. The top of the mast should be 2 meters above ground level.
Step 3: Secure with Concrete
Mix and pour concrete around the mast. Allow 24-48 hours for the concrete to fully cure before proceeding.
Step 4: Mount the Sensors
Install sensors according to the following heights:
- Temperature/Humidity Shield: 1.5-2m above ground
- Rain Gauge: 1m above ground, level surface
- Wind Sensors: Top of mast (2m)
- Solar Radiation: Top of mast, unobstructed
Sensor Calibration
After installation, each sensor requires calibration to ensure accuracy:
Temperature Calibration
Compare readings with a certified thermometer for 24 hours. Adjust calibration offset if readings differ by more than ±0.5°C.
Rainfall Calibration
Pour exactly 25mm of water into the rain gauge funnel. The system should register 25mm ±1mm.
Wind Direction Calibration
Use a compass to verify the wind vane points to true north when aligned with magnetic north (adjust for local magnetic declination).
Connectivity Setup
Configure the data logger according to your connectivity method:
For NBIoT Connection:
- Insert the SIM card provided
- Power on the data logger
- Wait for network registration (LED will turn green)
- Verify data transmission in your dashboard
For WiFi Connection:
- Access the configuration interface
- Select your WiFi network
- Enter network password
- Test connectivity
Maintenance Schedule
Regular maintenance ensures long-term accuracy and reliability:
Monthly Tasks:
- Clean rain gauge of debris
- Check battery voltage
- Verify all sensors are secure
Quarterly Tasks:
- Clean temperature radiation shield
- Lubricate wind sensor bearings
- Check data accuracy against reference instruments
Annual Tasks:
- Full sensor calibration check
- Replace batteries (if applicable)
- Inspect mast and mounting hardware
- Update firmware if available
Troubleshooting Common Issues
No Data Transmission
- Check power connections
- Verify network connectivity
- Confirm SIM card is properly inserted
- Check antenna connections
Inaccurate Readings
- Verify sensor placement meets guidelines
- Check for nearby heat sources or obstructions
- Recalibrate sensors if necessary
- Clean sensors of dirt, spider webs, or debris
